Ana Alexandre

A. Alexandre graduated in Biology from the University of Évora in 2003 and completed her PhD, also in Biology, at the same university in 2010. She is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Évora and a researcher at MED – Mediterranean Institute for Agriculture, Environment and Development & CHANGE – Institute for Global Change and Sustainability.

In terms of research area, A. Alexandre is dedicated to the study of beneficial soil bacteria and their interaction with plants, as well as the relationship between agroecosystem management and soil microbial activity. She has participated in several national and international projects and is currently involved in several projects addressing the impact of agronomic management on soil microbiome. Regarding her teaching activities, her main areas of expertise are molecular biology, microbiology and bioinformatics.

Co-inventor of two European patent applications relating to soil microorganisms capable of promoting the growth of legumes, she is also co-responsible for the services offered to the community by the Soil Microbiology Laboratory-MED.

A. Alexandre is Assistant Director of the Department of Biology, a member of the Course Committee for the Bachelor’s Degree in Human Biology, and has also been responsible for the Soil Microbiology Laboratory-MED.

Francisco Ferreira

Francisco Ferreira is Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering of the NOVA School of Science and Technology of NOVA University Lisbon (FCT-NOVA), Director of CENSE  (Centre for Environmental and Sustainability Research) and Member of the Board of the Asscoiate Laboratory CHANGE. He holds a degree in Environmental Engineering from FCT-NOVA, a master’s degree from Virginia Tech in the USA and a PhD from Universidade Nova de Lisboa. He is the author of several papers, book chapters and books related with air pollution, climate change, and sustainable development. He was President of Quercus from 1996 to 2001 and Vice President from 2007 to 2011. He was a member of the National Water Council and the National Council for Environment and Sustainable Development. He is currently the President of “ZERO – Sustainable Terrestrial System Association”, a non-governmental environment organization with national activity.
